The Arc of Orleans County Celebrates National Developmental Disabiltities Awareness Month

During the month of March each year, The Arc of Orleans County celebrates Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month with its sister chapters across the state as well as across the nation.

Individuals with developmental disabilities have goals and dreams like everyone else - they want to make friends, have caring relationships, be independent, find meaningful employment, and make contributions and be involved in their community. National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month is a perfect time to step up and make a difference. You can help by hiring a person with a disability; inviting one to participate in your civic organization or community activity; contacting your legislator and asking him or her to support citizens with disabilities in your community; or giving time or money to an organization supporting people with disabilities.

The Arc of Orleans County has begun its Annual Membership Drive for 2012. If you haven’t already become a member, please consider doing so and make a gift to help The Arc of Orleans County continue the work of assisting people with disabilities. The membership letter has been mailed to everyone on The Arc's mailing list. If you aren't on the mailing list and are interested in becoming a member, please call The Arc's Community Relations Department at 585-589-5516 ext. 227 (Denise Withey).

Help The Arc Give Back

As one of the chapters of NYSARC, Inc., The Arc of Orleans County is taking part in the ongoing NYSARC Gives Back initiative. President’s Project Week is scheduled for Sunday, March 25, 2012 through Saturday, March 31, 2012. The goal of President’s Project Week is to have all the NYSARC Chapters participate in a volunteer program in our community during that week.

The Arc of Orleans County will be collecting personal care items, household supplies and pet related items from Monday, February 20th through Friday, March 30th. These items will be donated to Community Action of Orleans & Genesee to be given to people in our community who are in need (transitional, lower income, homeless).

Annette Finch from Community Action stated that these are the type of items that they don’t typically get donated but they are sorely in need of. Please see below for a list of some of the items we would like to collect.

Xania Hernandez Named December Student of the Month at Rainbow Preschool

Xania Hernandez was named the December 2011 Student of the Month! She received this award because she had graduated from a smaller classroom due to her hard work, improving skills, and overall growth in all areas.

Xania has a spirited personality that staff and peers embrace. She is a happy and delightful student, smiling and participating in classroom activities. Xania is increasing her socialization both with adults and peers, as she spontaneously greets and shares in the classroom setting both vocally and with her communication device. She excels at singing. Xania is working so hard and demonstrates a positive attitude in learning- we love watching her bloom!!

The Arc of Orleans County and Rainbow Preschool would like to congratulate Xania on a job well done!

Tiffany Grabowksi Named Volunteer of the Quarter

Tiffany was awarded Volunteer of the Quarter for October through December 2011. She interned with Family Support Services from September through December 2011. She worked with the Director of Family Support Services on an extremely difficult case during this time frame. Tiffany put together numerous documentations and did an intensive time line for an individual. This allowed The Arc of Orleans County to advocate strongly for the individual. Along with the Director of Family Support Services, Tiffany attended court procedures and attended meetings with various local agencies. If it wasn’t for Tiffany’s assistance, the outcome of this situation may not have ended as positively as it did.

It has been a pleasure to have Tiffany intern with Family Support Services!

Worked at Agency how many years: I have worked for The Arc on and off since 1993.

Went back to College in: I earned my Associate’s Degree from GCC in 1997 and will be finishing up my Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at Buffalo State in May 2012. I will be applying to graduate school at the University of Buffalo to obtain my Master’s Degree by spring of 2013.

I went back to college because: I went back for my family and to fulfill myself. I have been through some challenging circumstances and I would like to help others to overcome any challenges they may have. I want to give them a hand up.

Plans after degree: I would like to open a mission in Medina for people in need of assistance
( homeless, lower income). The mission would provide transitional housing, counseling and living skills aimed at self-sufficiency.

I would also like to go into politics so that I can make changes that work for the people and help them to be self-sufficient.

Born: In Albion at the Old Arnold Gregory Complex in 1975.

What’s on my TV: Intervention

Favorite movie: The Breakfast Club

In my car you’ll find me listening to: Anything but country music.

I would like to trade places for a day with: A politician.

My very first job: Double Dips. This job was where I learned my work ethic.

Favorite vacation spot: New Hampshire – I love the country and nature.

Favorite time of day and why: Dinner time because I get to spend time with my family - sons Drake (16), Gage (13), and Kole Alan (1 mo.) as well as my boyfriend Shaun Jones.

Favorite food: Homemade pizza with peppers, onions and pepperoni.

My secret talent: I have talented toes. I can pinch people, pick up things and tie bows.

On the weekend you can find me: Hanging out with my family.

What I admire most in others: Genuineness.

My heroes: My Mom and Dad. They had three children and stayed together through many things. Dad worked hard and we never wanted for anything. They taught me that it’s better to be rich in love and happiness rather than material possessions. Mom and Dad also taught me to be spiritual and to try and make the world a better place.

What I would say to a potential volunteer: Volunteering at The Arc is a very good experience. It’s rewarding and you gain knowledge of the program and the field. I am amazed at the strength of the individuals served by The Arc and I know you will be too.

The series will also provide an opportunity to connect with other parents and to learn advocacy skills that will help to navigate in the world of special education.

Every participant will receive a free copy of the book written by Pete and Pam Wright , “From Emotions to Advocacy”, along with other state and federal resources pertaining to special education.

Seniors Receive Emergency Meal Kits

With bad weather lurking around every corner, there may be a day or two this winter when The Arc of Orleans County’s Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers may not be able to deliver their daily meals to the seniors on their route. To ensure that the seniors’ food needs are taken care of, Meals on Wheels came up with the idea to give each senior three emergency meal kits that meet their daily nutritional requirements.

The three kits all contain non-perishable foods such as crackers, peanut butter and jelly packets, canned oranges, tuna and chicken salad kits, and V-8 juice. The meals were being delivered to the seniors along with their regular lunches over a three-day period along with a letter explaining why these meals are so important. “Many seniors don’t have family close by or transportation and, if the power were out due to bad weather, they may not be able to use a microwave. None of these meals provided require heating or refrigeration. They can just open the bag and enjoy their meal,” said Vicki Havholm, Meals on Wheels Coordinator.

The Arc’s Meals on Wheels program is run in partnership with Orleans County’s Office for the Aging. Both Meals on Wheels and the Office for the Aging would like to remind everyone that, if you have an elderly neighbor, please make sure to check on them from time to time, especially during these cold winter months.

1. ABATE Orleans County Chapter raised money for a shed and gate at the pool area.

At Rainbow Preschool…
1. The DanPaul Foundation provided grant funding to purchase equipment and supplies as well as to assist with staff training costs.
2. The Arc received grant funding from the Kenlou Foundation to purchase classroom amplification systems, assessment tools and supplies.
3. The Children’s Guild Foundation provided grant funding through the Mabel Louise Burns Education Fund for equipment and supplies related to health and safety and assistive technologies.
4. The Kelly For Kids Foundation in conjunction with Terry Hills provided funding for equipment and supplies at our Batavia Preschool site.
5. Wal-mart funding allowed the purchase of supplies for our visually impaired students.

1. The Agency received grant funding from the AT&T Foundation to assist with the transition of young adults from school to adulthood.
2. The Sandstone Trust of Medina provided grant funding for an Amtrak trip to Syracuse.

Hayden Pond Named November Student of the Month at Rainbow Preschool

Hayden Pond was named the November 2011 Rainbow Preschool Student of the Month. Hayden received this award because he made great progress on his curriculum at home and at school in the month of November.

Hayden's family had undergone changes and he continued to work hard and was ready with a hug when others needed it. Hayden also worked diligently on using his Dynavox speech device to communicate with his family and therapists. For his progress, good attitude and helping his family, Hayden is very deserving of November's Student of the Month.

Direct Support Professional of the Year is Patricia Joy

The Arc of Orleans County is proud to announce the winner of the Edward S. Woods, Sr. Direct Support Professional of the Year Award. Patricia Joy has been employed by The Arc for eleven years and has been the Enclave Supervisor at Freeze-Dry Foods in Albion since June 2009. Pat oversees seven individuals and is responsible for completing producation paperwork, doing quality control on products, and ensuring production demands are met. Pat does not sit behind a desk all day but can be seen working hands-on with her crew.

Pat's encouragement and dedication to her crew has helped them not only in their professional goals, but their personal goals as well. One of her crew has recently become independent, moving into her own apartment. In addition, three crew members attended driving school and obtained their drivers' licenses.

Pat consistently goes above and beyond and, due to her hard work and the faith she has in her team, they have earned the respect of everyone at Freeze-Dry. Thank you, Pat, for all you do for the Arc, Freeze-Dry, and the individuals we serve. Congratulations!

Jen Batt Named Arc's Employee of the Year

The Arc of Orleans County is proud to announce that Jen Batt, Senior Medicaid Service Coordinator (MSC) with Family Support Services, has been named the Agency's Employee of the Year for 2011. Jen displays initiative, decisiveness, drive, and commitment to the people we serve and the Agency.

Jen played a huge role in the implemenation of a new system the Agency began using and has worked to create and develop templates for staff to use when inputting data into the new system. Jen is always there when people turn to her for guidance in managing their way through the system. In addition, Jen is required to review 100% of the information for accuracy and certify them in order for the Agency staff to begin their work.

In addition, Jen's leadership role during the recent redesign and transitition of Medicaid Service Coordination did not go unnoticed; she has maintained professionalism as the continues to lead her staff through these difficult changes.

Jen is truly deserving of this prestigius award. Congratulations, Jen!

Shane Ritzenthaler Named October Student of the Month

Shane Ritzenthaler was named the October 2011 Rainbow Preschool Student of the Month. Shane received this award because of all his hard work over the years at Rainbow. He is extremely bright and just "wows" his regular preschool teacher with his ability to identify colors, shapes, letters, numbers, and letter sounds. He is meeting new people and new friends. Shane continues to make strides in achieving his goals as he works towards building his skill set for kindergarten next year.

Castilone Chrysler Dodge Jeep located in Batavia, NY delivered a 2012 Dodge Caravan to The Arc's Main Office today, Friday, December 2, 2011. This van will be used by our Nutri-Fair/Meals on Wheels program to assist in the delivery of meals. Funding for this van was provided by the East Hill Foundation located in Williamsville, NY.

Kellie Spychalski, Assistant Executive Director, stated, "We are delighted with this extraordinary gift from the East Hill Foundation. Their funding will allow us to serve our seniors in the Meals on Wheels program more efficiently."

Rainbow Preschool Student's Visit Brown's Berry Patch

The children from The Arc's Rainbow Preschool site had a great time on their field trip to Brown's Berry Patch on Wednesday, October 5th. The children were able to take a walk through the orchards, visit the animals and exercise on the playground. They also got a tasty treat - apple cider and a donut.

Representatives from the Orleans Correctional Facility celebrated Make A Difference Day by presenting checks at Rainbow Preschool and Meals on Wheels on Tuesday, October 18th. The picture above shows the presentation made to Theresa Lehman, Director of Educational & Clinical Services, and one of our students, Anthony Harrington. Rainbow Preschool will be purchasing an FM System (worn by Anthony) with the money received from Orleans Correctional.

Orleans Correctional works very hard during the year to collect money for this special day. They hold raffles, cook outs, and much more to ensure that they can keep raising funds for charitable organizations. The representatives spent their day making a difference by presenting checks to a total of ten programs (nine organizations).

Thank you Orleans Correctional for your support and generosity! You are truly making a difference in the lives of those we serve.

The Arc of Orleans County's Nutri-Fair/Meals on Wheels will be holding a Pot Roast Dinner on Thursday, October 13, 2011 from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm at 16 East Academy Street (Old Albion Grammer School).

The DanPaul Foundation Awards Grant to Rainbow Preschool Program

At a special Board Meeting held on October 5, 2011, the Board of Directors unanimously appointed Kellie Spychalski as the new Executive Director of The Arc of Orleans County effective January 1, 2012. The current Executive Director Don Colquhoun will be retiring on December 31, 2011.

Kellie has been employed at The Arc for almost nineteen years in various positions and has served as the Assistant Executive Director for the last five years.

The Arc of Orleans County is looking for new members

to join our ALL STARS Self Advocacy Team.

Do you want to gain the knowlege to take charge of your own life? Have you ever felt that people were not hearing your wants, needs or desires? Do you want to gain the tools to have your ISP written in a way you want your life reflected? Have you ever felt you wanted to make changes in your life but no one was listening? If that's the case, Self-Advocacy is for you! Our meetings are held the second Thursday of every month at 5:30 pm at our office located at 122 Caroline Street in Albion, NY.

What the Self-Advocates Do and How We Raise Funds

We raise funds in various ways. At this time Self-Advocates are selling Bon Ton coupon booklets for $5.00 and starting on November 1st we will be selling candy bars. We collect bottles on an ongoing basis to raise funds for different funfilled activities. We also have held car washes.

The Self-Advocates held a picnic at Camp Rainbow that included other Arc Chapter members.

The Self-Advocates attend conferences to gain knowledge and make new life contacts.

The group is currently collecting personal care items for the Veterans Home In Batavia, NY for the holidays. The Self-Advocates will then make a holiday visit to bring over the gifts and honor the veterans for their service to our country.

On October 27, 2011, they will be attending a conference on unemployment and what it may mean. The Self-Advocates will also learn how the upcoming budget cuts may or may not impact employment. This conference will share available opportunities.

Do you dream of being a reporter or writer? ALL STARS Self Advocacy need you for their team to work on the SHOUT OUT Newspaper.

You may become as involved as you desire in the ALL STARS...the choice is yours but WHY NOT attend your first meeting on October 13, 2011 and decide for yourself if Self Advocacy can enrich your life.

Teen Sisters Named Arc of Orleans 'Best Friends'

Before The Arc of Orleans County sends a mailer out the door, sisters Abbie and Hannah Sugar likely have a role in the process, from proofreading to stuffing envelopes. The sisters from Albion are meticulous, and they sometimes are lifesavers, sparing the Agency from an embarrassing mistake.

"Everything they do, they do perfectly," said Kellie Spychalski, Arc Assistant Executive Director. "They catch everything. They're very detail-oriented."

The Arc presented Abbie, 14, and Hannah, 17, with its top award, its "Best Friend", during its annual awards banquet Friday at Hickory Ridge Golf and Country Club.

The Sugars also help with other Arc special events, from preparing for golf tournaments to running a craft station at Camp Rainbow. "They're wonderful young ladies," Spychalski said. "We hope to have them for many years."

The Sugars are home-schooled. Their parents, Matt and Sharon Sugar, made community service party of Abbie and Hannah's education. The sisters' aunt, Carole Mitchell, works at The Arc. She suggested they try volunteering in the Community Relations Department. That was three years ago. The girls typically stop in the office once a week.

"I enjoy interacting with the people," said Abbie, a sophomore. "They're all nice and very friendly." Hannah is a senior. She said the office tasks, including shredding paper, aren't drudgery. The Arc staff make the jobs fun, she said.

The Arc presented other awards on Friday, including:

Community Service Award - Leslie Swanson, a member of The Arc's Self Advocacy All-Stars. She volunteers at Rainbow Preschool, assisting teachers and students.

Self Advocate of the Year - Duane Montgomery, a Self Advocacy All-Star, who volunteered for The Arc at the 4-H Fair and the Founder's Fair. he also assisted Arc staff in diversity training.

Heritage Award - Christopher Mitchell Funeral Homes, a long-time supporter of Arc events.

Community Worker of the Year - Jeremy Cramer, who works with The Arc's maintenance crew, making repairs to Arc offices and residences.

Enclave Worker of the Year - Kelly Steffen, an employee at Freeze-Dry Foods in Albion.

Mobile Crew Worker of the Year - Robert Greer. An Arc employee since 2006, Greer is dependable and detailing working on the day crew.

Orleans Enterprises Worker of the Year - Jeremy Heye, a materials handling worker with outstanding attendance.

Business Partnership Award - Freeze-Dry Foods in Albion. The company processes freeze-dries meats and retail pet food. Since 2009, Freeze-Dry has welcomed workers served by The Arc. Those workers pack product that will be shipped to stores.

Do you have a passion for design? Create the winning theme design for the 2012 NYSARC, Inc. Annual Convention and you could win an iPad 2!! This contest is open to all of NYSARC's chapter employees (including Arc of Orleans), their family members, individuals supported by a chapter, chapter members, NYS students in grades 7-12 or NYS college students.

Artwork designs should reflect the theme for the convention: "Embracing Change: Meeting the Challenge". NYSARC Kicks Off 62nd Annual Convention on October 20th

NYSARC's 62nd Annual Convention is being held Thursday, October 20th through Saturday, October 22nd. The theme for this year's convention is "Moving Forward: Advocacy in Action."

The programming has been expanded to include educational and training opportunities for self-advocates and direct support professionals. The stars of the documentary Wretches and Jabberers will be the first keynote speakers.

NYSARC holds a convention annually to provide an opportunity to expand upon the collective knowledge and understanding of our field as we go into the future. Workshops are selected that are consistent with NYSARC's mission and vision as well as being focused on timely and important topics. The convention also allows NYSARC to reach a large number of people with a unified voice. The hope is that, each year, the attendees are educated and their eyes are opened to opportunities, challenges, soluntions, and ideas that they were not privy to before.

The Arc just received word from CITGO that we did not win the $5,000 Citgo Gift Card for fuel; however, we were voted among the top 50 charities in the contest that ran from July 14th through August 11th.

September is National Cholesterol Education Month

Do You Know Your Levels?

Cholesterol levels, that is. Over 65 million Americans have high cholesterol and many do not know it. High cholesterol increases your risk for heart disease.

Now is the time to get your levels tested. Everyone over age 20 should have their cholesterol measured at least once every five years. Talk to your doctor about getting a lipoprotein test or other test that measures your cholesterol. You need to know your total LDL (bad) and HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

If you have high cholesterol, talk to your doctor about possible treatments. In addition, lifestyle changes can reduce your levels:

1. Eating a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, with plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables

2. Working toward a healthy weight

3. Getting regular physical activity

4. Quitting smoking

Do you have a passion for design? Create the winning theme design for the 2012 NYSARC, Inc. Annual Convention and you could win an iPad 2! This contest is open to all of NYSARC's chapter employees (including Arc of Orleans), their family members, individuals supported by a chapter, chapter members, NYS students in grades 7-12 or NYS college students.

Artwork designs should reflect the theme for the convention: "Embracing Change: Meeting the Challenge". Submissions can be in the form of an original drawing or a computer generated image in either black and white or any color combination. Must be on 8 & 1/2" by 11" white paper. No text except the theme wording is allowed.

NYSARC, Inc. has a new website! The new site was unveiled at the beginning of August and has many new features that will be of great value to individuals with disabilities, their families, and all who advocate for them. The Resource Library features hundreds of electronic resources, from websites to online articles to informative videos. Covering topics from autism spectrum disorders to historical information on legislative efforts, the Resource Library will continue to grow and expand over time. http://www.nysarc.org/resource_library/

The new NYSARC News blog will highlight important information about upcoming events, share the latest analysis on advocacy efforts, and provide a forum where you can ask questions of NYSARC staff and other experts. http://blog.nysarc.org/

Become a Physically Active Family

Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Engaging in physical activity as a family can be a fun way to get everyone moving. Here are some activities you and your family can consider to get started on a path to a healthier lifestyle.

Give kids toys that encourage physical activity, such as balls, kites, and jump ropes.

Encourage children to join a sports team or try a new physical activity.

Walk around the block after a meal.

Spend time together doing a fun activity, like family bike day or swim day.

Issue a family challenge to commit to physical activity five days a week for six weeks.

Limit TV time and keep the television out of your child's bedroom.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month

Are you and your family up ot date on your immunizations? Vaccines help prevent the spread of infection, including potentially deadly diseases. Now is the ideal time to make sure you are current on your immunization needs, as school is about to begin and flu seasoon is right around the corner.

Many school districts require certain immunizations for children to attend. Check with your school and your doctor to ensure your child has all the necessary and recommended vaccinations for their age group. Also, older children going to college should ensure they are current in their immunizations, as they will be living closely with many people.

Immunizations aren't just for kids! Adults should also check with their doctor to make sure they have had the recommended vaccinations. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that all people over the age of 6 months receive a seasonal flu vaccine annually to protect against influenza.

Ida Caldwell Named June Employee of the Month

Ida Caldwell has been named The Arc of Orleans County's Employee of the Month for June. Ida is the Empowering Families Coordinator with the Family Support Services Program. Ida is also an investigator for the Agency and during the month of June had to work on an investigation of a very sensitive nature that involved both staff and individuals served. Ida handled herself in the most professional manner while this investigation took a toll on her emotionally. Throughout this investigation, Ida was able to keep her objectivity and continue to seek out the facts in the investigation.

Summer Safety & First Aid

Here are some tips to keep you safe and healthy during the Summer:

BIKING:
1. Before riding check your bike's condition
2. Always wear a helmet
3. Wear bright colors
4. Avoid clothing that can get caught in the chain
5. Use reflectors
6. Don't ride at night
7. Obey the same traffic signs and signals that cars do
8. Ride single-file and to the right with traffic
9. Signal with your left hand

OUTDOOR SPORTS:
1. Have water handy to drink at all times
2. Play in safe areas, away from traffic
3. Warm up before vigorous activity
4. Wear protective gear
5. Watch for following symptoms of heat stroke: decreased sweating, red, hot and dry skin, confusion, irritability, deep breathing, and unconsciousness
6. If heat stroke symptoms occur; move to a cool place, remove unnecessary clothing, lay on back with feet raised, sponge with cool water. Call 911 IMMEDIATELY!

BOATING:
1. Follow boat safety rules
2. Make sure everyone wears personal flotation device
3. Check equipment and fuel before leaving
4. Carry emergency beacons and/or a ship to shore radio if planning long trip
5. Don't boat in bad weather or near swimmers or water skiers
6. Always let someone know expected departure and return

SUMMER STORMS:
1. In a thunderstorm, seek shelter at once (e.g. in a building or car)
2. If outside, don't take shelter under a tree, and avoid open water
3. Put aside metal items you are carrying
4. In a tornado, seek shelter on the lowest floor
5. Avoid windows and get under a heavy table
6. if outdoors get under a gully or ditch and cover your head

INSECT BITE PROTECTION:
1. Wear protective clothing; long sleeves, pants, shoes and socks
2. Apply a repellent containing no more than 10% DEET
3. Avoid perfumes and scented lotions
4. Carry the proper medication at all times if you have an allergy to insects

Camp Rainbow Pool Renovations Completed on Schedule for Camp's Opening Day

The renovations and upgrades of the Camp Rainbow pool are complete and it is up and ready for the 2011 Camp Season! The Arc began to ask for funding assistance for the pool project in December of 2009 and the improvements began in 2010. The Agency raised $16,200 of the $22,860 needed to complete the project. The Arc sends a very special thank you to the Child Welfare Association, Lawley Service, Inc., the Lyndonville Area Foundation, The Rochester Rams, the Medina Area of Churches, the Medina United Methodist Church, and the Orleans County Foundation for their generosity.

Pattie Kepner, Director of Family Services, stated, “The children at Camp Rainbow just love the pool and we are very excited to have all the upgrades done in time for the 2011 season.” The 2011 season begins Monday July 11th and runs through Friday, August 12th.

Camp Rainbow is a five week summer day camp located at 2272 Townline Road in Lyndonville, New York. It serves any child who resides in Orleans County who has completed Kindergarten. It is a joyful place where children, with and without disabilities, get to learn, play, and form lasting friendships.

July is UV Safety Month

Enjoy fun in the sun safely. Participating in outdoor activities like swimming, tennis or gardening generally mean hours of exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) rays. Remember to take precautions to protect your skin and eyes anytime you’re exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Did you know?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the US.

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are the main cause of skin cancer.

UV rays can damage your eyes and cause premature aging of the skin.

Who’s at greatest risk for skin cancer?

Anyone can get skin cancer, but the risk is greatest for people with:

White or light-colored skin with freckles
Blond or red hair
Blue or green eyes

Take these steps to help prevent skin cancer:
Limit your exposure to the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are strongest.
Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
Cover up with long sleeves and a hat.
Check your skin regularly for any changes.
Wear sunglasses whenever you’re outside

May 2011 Employee of the Month is Vicki Havholm

Vicki Havholm, Administrative Assistant with The Arc's Nutrition Program (Meals on Wheels/Nutri-Fair), has been named the Agency's Employee of the Month for May 2011. During the month of May, an individual served by The Arc who works as a Meals On Wheels driver, was in need of transportation to the hospital for surgery. Vicki graciously took the day off, using her personal time, and transported him to the hospital. She stayed throughout the surgery so someone was there with him when he came out. She took him to get his medication and transported him home. Later that evening she checked on him to make sure he had everything he needed and even offered to bring him food. Vicki has also volunteered to do this again when he goes for a second surgery. Vicki's genuine concern and support shown to this individual is truly appreciated. Thank you, Vicki, for going above and beyond!

Students Enjoy Trip to Mark's Pizzeria

Recently students in both the morning and afternoon classes at Rainbow Preschool, along with their teacher Colleen Thompson and other staff, enjoyed a nice outing touring and making pizza at Mark's Pizzeria courtesy of Brian Christiaansen and his son Brady. School's Out...Now What?

School is out and work is not! For working parents, summer vacation can seem like an impossible task. Parents still need to retain their own work routine but the kids often have gone from school structure to no structure. Whether your children are 5 or 15, this poses many challenges for the working parent.

A few things to try during the summer months:

Make a schedule - be flexible, enlist your kids' help with this and post it at home. Whether the kids are going to a sitter or old enough to stay at home, a visual schedule and routine can be helpful. If your child needs that structure, break the schedule down into hourly sections. If there are tasks you expect to be done, write it out.

Create a network - having a ‘go-to’ group of other parents is always helpful. If they are relatively close by, you could even make arrangements to "exchange" kids during work hours. For older kids, this can be a quick visit or a longer phone call with reminders. Enlist friends and family. Perhaps a relative would love to take your kids. Grandparents can also a great resource. Younger children may need to stay with a relative all day. Older children can sometimes spend a few hours at a time with friends or family to break up the day and add minimal supervision.

Consider a home-camp share among friends. This requires some planning but if you have a good group of parent friends who are in the same situation as you, it could really work well.

For children that are home alone, give them a project to work on. It can be a fun project or chore related. Setting an expectation for part of the day avoids the summer long television and video game habit.

Let go of perfection – None of us are superhuman, so don't try to be. Work within your limitations and relax a little. Delegate, prioritize, and don't be afraid to let some things go!

Holley 3rd Graders Hold Spell-A-Thon Fundraiser

During the month of May, students from Holley Elementary School's 3rd grade partnered with The Arc of Orleans County and held a Spell-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit Camp Rainbow. Students asked family and friends for pledges and then took part in a 100 word spelling test over a one week period. The results were wonderful, with a total of $1,189.15 raised.

The top student was Colin Buesing who raised $204.60. Colin is a student in Mrs. Sevenski's 3rd grade class. Mrs. Sevenski's class received top class honors, raising $399.60. They were treated to a pizza party in their classroom on June 13th.

As a thank you, all the students enjoyed a fun-filled day at Camp Rainbow on Wednesday, June 15th. They participated in many of the same activities that the campers enjoy during the summer (arts & crafts, games, storytime); they even learned the Camp Rainbow song.

Thank you to all the students, parents, teachers, and volunteers who helped to make this funraiser and field trip a success!
