Making a Difference to Orleans County Seniors

Members of the "Make a Difference Day" committee (employees of Orleans Correctional Facility) were very busy on Friday, October 26th.  In addition to stopping by The Arc's Rainbow Preschool and donating a check for $300, the group also made a stop at The Arc's Nutri-Fair congregate site in Albion.  The committee also donated $300 for the Nutri-Fair/Meals on Wheels Program.  The funds will help to continue the program's mission of providing a healthy, hot meals to the seniors of our County.

The Arc is very grateful to everyone from Orleans Correctional who donated to or helped to ensure the "Make a Difference Day" was a success.  Your generous gifts to The Arc are very much appreciated!

Metro Mattress Gives Back!

For the third year in a row, Metro Mattress held a special program entitled “50 Beds in 50 Days” to give back to the community.  The state was divided into four areas, with Metro Mattress donating 50 beds to each area—a total of 200 new beds!  Organizations submitted an application describing their mission, a request for beds, and why the beds were needed.

The Arc of Orleans County was a grateful recipient of this year’s “50 Beds in 50 Days” program, receiving three new beds from Metro Mattress.  The new beds were recently delivered to very happy individuals at The Arc’s West Avenue residence.

 Thank you, Metro Mattress!!

Arc Making a Difference Thanks to Orleans Correctional

The Arc of Orleans County would like to thank the Orleans Correctional Facility for their support of Rainbow Preschool and their donation of $300.  Each year, Orleans Correctional holds a "Make a Difference Day" and money raised benefits not-for-profits and organizations in the Western New York area.  This group has been very generous of their support of the Preschool for MANY years!
Representatives from Orleans Correctional were treated to a tour of the Preschool facilities including the classrooms and therapy rooms, and even got to join in a singing group with one of the music therapists.  Thank you to everyone at Orleans Correctional Facility who participated in the "Make a Difference Day" and for your support of The Arc and Rainbow Preschool.

Down Syndrome Awareness Month

October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month

What is Down Syndrome?

In every cell in the human body there is a nucleus, where genetic material is stored in genes.  Genes carry the codes responsible for all of our inherited traits and are grouped along rod-like structures called chromosomes.  Typically, the nucleus of each cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent. Down syndrome occurs when an individual has a full or partial extra copy of chromosome 21.

This additional genetic material alters the course of development and causes the characteristics associated with Down syndrome. A few of the common physical traits of Down syndrome are low muscle tone, small stature, an upward slant to the eyes, and a single deep crease across the center of the palm - although each person with Down syndrome is a unique individual and may possess these characteristics to different degrees, or not at all.

How Common is Down Syndrome?

One in every 691 babies in the the United States is born with Down syndrome, making Down syndrome the most common genetic condition. Approximately 400,000 Americans have Down syndrome and about 6,000 babies with Down syndrome are born in the United States each year.

To learn about ways to get involved and raise awareness go to the National Down Syndrome Society at www.ndss.org.
