New Video Released - "Wonderful"

 

The Songs for NYSARC campaign continues with the release of a second video. Entitled    "Wonderful", this song by Kesleah Hall is just that!  We hope that you enjoy the video, which celebrates the specialness of the individuals and their diversity.  The are different, they are special, they are wonderful!  Be on the lookout for some familiar faces in the video!

LOCATION:               RAINBOW PRESCHOOL -  ALBION SITE

  

DUTIES:               Under moderate supervision, assists in the planning and implementation of activities for young children in a classroom setting.  Is directly responsible to the classroom teacher. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:   Related work experience preferred.  Ability to deal with people at all organizational levels, especially young children; and good administrative, planning, organizational and oral & written communications skills are required.  Ability to follow specific instructions, lift and carry 40 pounds in order to carry children and equipment.  Works well independently, as well as in a team atmosphere.  Must be a team player. Must be fluent in Spanish and English.

 STARTING RATE:     Grade 3 - $7.77 per hour.

DUTIES:                   Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of housekeeping functions including mopping, sweeping, vacuuming and scrubbing designated areas.

           

QUALIFICATIONS:   One year performing custodial/janitorial duties is required.  Manual dexterity and good oral communications are required.
 

STARTING RATE:     Grade 3 - $7.77/hr.

The Arc of Orleans County Gives Back

As part of NYSARC's Gives Back initiative, NYSARC chapters and our state office participated in the President's Project Week from March 25th through March 31st.  This is a week in which we give back to our local communities. 

The Arc of Orleans hosted our first blood drive for The American Red Cross.  16 units were collected which translates to approximately 48 lives that will be saved.

 

The Arc also collected donations for the Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern.  This is the "Agency of Last Resort" because they work with people who have nowhere else to go.   Arc staff donated baby items and personal care supplies.

 

 

Executive Director of The Arc of Orleans County, Kellie Spychalski is seen above delivering the donations to Jessica Okoniewski, Assistant Executive Director of the Genesee-Orleans Ministry of Concern.

Each April 2, Autism Speaks celebrates Light It Up Blue along with the international autism community, in commemoration of the United Nations-sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day. Light It Up Blue is a unique global initiative that kicks-off Autism Awareness Month and helps raise awareness about autism. What is Autism?

What Is Autism? What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. They include autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS) and Asperger syndrome.

How Common Is Autism?

Autism statistics from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identify around 1 in 88 American children as on the autism spectrum-a ten-fold increase in prevalence in 40 years. Careful research shows that this increase is only partly explained by improved diagnosis and awareness. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States.

By way of comparison, more children are diagnosed with autism each year than with juvenile diabetes, AIDS or cancer, combined.* ASD affects over 2 million individuals in the U.S. and tens of millions worldwide.
