October Marks 70th Anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month

Celebrating 70 Years!
1945-2015

 

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the return of service members with disabilities from World War II sparks public interest in the contributions of people with disabilities in the workplace. On August 11, 1945, President Harry S. Truman approves a Congressional resolution declaring the first week in October “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” In 1962, the word “physically” is removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

Held each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is a time to celebrate the many and varied contributions of America’s workers with disabilities. The theme for this year — which marks 70 years since the first observance — is “My Disability is One Part of Who I Am.”

On behalf of the Arc of Orleans County, thank you to all the donors and sponsors for supporting our 2^nd Annual Legacy of Love Basket Raffle.   Due to your generosity, we raised over $7,500, had 130 items/baskets donated, 23 sponsorships and over 125 friends attended.

As one of our primary fundraising events, we are very grateful for this continued support.  We are truly blessed to work in such a wonderful community. 

Thanks to all the awesome volunteers for your time and dedication to the Arc as well as to all the staff members that helped.  Special thanks also goes out to all of you that sold raffle tickets, especially Jarred Saj.  Jarred sold 100 tickets for the Arc of Orleans!

Mark your calendars for next year.  Our 3^rd Annual Legacy of Love Basket Raffle will be held September 10^th from 10 am to 2 pm, with a special sneak preview, Friday, September 9^th.
