POSITION: VOCATIONAL TRAINING ASSISTANT – RELIEF STAFF 1:1
DAY HAB PROGRAM – WITHOUT WALLS
16 HOURS PER WEEK

REPORTS TO: PAM LAMAR – DAY HABILITATION MANAGER


LOCATION: 215 WASHINGTON ST. , ALBION


DUTIES: Provides direct hands on supervision, training and counseling to people with disabilities in a variety of vocational & community settings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Working level knowledge of production techniques, methods and/or training involving adults who are disabled. Demonstrates skills equivalent to a high school diploma. Ability to deal with people at all organizational levels, good administrative, organizational, problem solving, training and oral & written communication skills required. Must be flexible. Need a valid NYS drivers license. Must be able to lift, push and pull 40lbs.

STARTING RATE: Grade 5 DC - $8.52/hr.

Vocational Training/Community Living Assistants who are
currently paid at Grade 9 will continue to be paid at Grade 9.

Natural Creativity at Marshall Road



The staff and residents at Marshall Road have been busy creating artwork from rocks. The picture above shows just a small portion of the creations that they have made.

The residents and staff of Marshall Road have been busy this summer working on a garden that is as beautiful as it is creative. It is made up of a variety of flowers and plants, rock artwork, various feeders and garden decorations. They have eight hummingbirds and many butterflies that share in their wonderful garden.

Membership Update

The Arc of Orleans County's 2011-2012 Membership Drive is coming to an end. Each year the Agency holds a membership drive beginning in February and ending in mid-September. If you have already sent in your membership, thank you very much! If you haven't The Arc needs you!

YOUR membership gives us a greater voice in Albany and can impact legislation and funding that provides crucial programs and services to people with disabilities. YOUR membership allows greater representation on NYSARC's Board of Governors. YOUR membership helps to insure that the needs and rights of people with disabilities are recognized at a local, state, and national level.

Membership cost begins at just $5.00 per person; friends of The Arc, individuals served, staff, and family members age 18 and over are eligible to become members. Two years ago we recorded a record number of members - 508 - and we hope to exceed that number this year. Want to Win an iPad 2? Enter NYSARC's Convention Theme Design Contest

Do you have a passion for design? Create the winning theme design for the 2012 NYSARC, Inc. Annual Convention and you could win an iPad 2! This contest is open to all of NYSARC's chapter employees (including Arc of Orleans), their family members, individuals supported by a chapter, chapter members, NYS students in grades 7-12 or NYS college students.

Artwork designs should reflect the theme for the convention: "Embracing Change: Meeting the Challenge". Submissions can be in the form of an original drawing or a computer generated image in either black and white or any color combination. Must be on 8 & 1/2" by 11" white paper. No text except the theme wording is allowed.

Deadline to return your design to The Arc of Orleans County is Wednesday, September 14th. For an application or more information, please contact Denise Withey, Community Relations Specialist, at 589-5516 ext. 227 or email her at dwithey@arcoforleans.org.

**Designs will be judged by attendees of the 2011 NYSARC, Inc. Annual Convention being held October 20-22, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albany, NY. The winner will be annouced at the event and then notified following the close of the Convention.

NYSARC Inc. Launches New Website

NYSARC, Inc. has a new website! The new site was unveiled at the beginning of August and has many new features that will be of great value to individuals with disabilities, their families, and all who advocate for them. The new website can be found at http://www.nysarc.org/ and has many new features:



  • The Resource Library features hundreds of electronic resources, from websites to online articles to informative videos. Covering topics from autism spectrum disorders to historical information on legislative efforts, the Resource Library will continue to grow and expand over time. http://www.nysarc.org/resource_library/


  • The new NYSARC News blog will highlight important information about upcoming events, share the latest analysis on advocacy efforts, and provide a forum where you can ask questions of NYSARC staff and other experts. http://blog.nysarc.org/


  • The new site also features Online memberships and donations. On this page, you can find The Arc of Orleans County (or other chapter) and sign up online to become a member. Membership is of vital importance to all of the state chapters and increases our voice in Albany in advocating for individuals with disabilities. http://www.nysarc.org/members

When NYSARC President John Schuppenhauer took office last October, one of his priorities was to embrace and expand on emerging technology. With the new website, they has definitely taken a step in the right direction. Congratulations to you, NYSARC, Inc. - Great Job!

POSITION: COMMUNITY LIVING ASSISTANT – REGULAR FULL TIME and PART TIME


REPORTS TO: Community Living Manager


LOCATION: Where Assigned


DUTIES: Provides program participants with support and training in independent living skills, such as meal planning and preparation, home maintenance, money management, etc.
Qualifications: Good math & writing skills. Must have valid NYS driver’s license. Experience preferred but not required. Must be willing to work various hours to include evenings, nights, overnights & holidays.

STARTING RATE: Grade 5DC - $8.52 per hour. Community Living Assistants who currently qualify to be paid at a Grade 9, will continue to be paid at that rate.

Become a Physically Active Family

Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Engaging in physical activity as a family can be a fun way to get everyone moving. Here are some activities you and your family can consider to get started on a path to a healthier lifestyle.


  • Give kids toys that encourage physical activity, such as balls, kites, and jump ropes.

  • Encourage children to join a sports team or try a new physical activity.

  • Walk around the block after a meal.

  • Spend time together doing a fun activity, like family bike day or swim day.

  • Issue a family challenge to commit to physical activity five days a week for six weeks.

  • Limit TV time and keep the television out of your child's bedroom.

Working level knowledge of people with disabilities, provide supervision, training, support of daily living skills and activities to people with disabilities in vocational/community settings. Ability to deal with people at all organizational levels, good administrative, organizational, problem solving, must be able to complete required trainings and oral & written communication skills required. Must be capable of lifting 40 lbs. Need a valid NYS drivers license.


STARTING RATE: Grade 5DC - $8.52/hr.

Vocational Training/Community Living Assistants who are currently paid at grade 9, will continue to be paid at grade 9.

Chiavetta's Chicken BBQ was a Great Success!

The Arc would like to thank everyone who came out and supported the Nutri-Fair/Meals on Wheels program Tuesday August 4th. Also, thank you to all the businesses, agencies, and organizations that pre-ordered and had their meals delivered.

All of you made this event a great success for the Meals on Wheels program.

Just a reminder that our Nutri-Fair/Meals on Wheels program will be holding their Chiavetta's Chicken BBQ tomorrow, Thursday, August 4th from noon to 4:00 pm at 16 East Academy Street (Old Grammar School) in Albion, NY.
