School's Out...Now What?

School is out and work is not! For working parents, summer vacation can seem like an impossible task. Parents still need to retain their own work routine but the kids often have gone from school structure to no structure. Whether your children are 5 or 15, this poses many challenges for the working parent.

A few things to try during the summer months:

  • Make a schedule - be flexible, enlist your kids' help with this and post it at home. Whether the kids are going to a sitter or old enough to stay at home, a visual schedule and routine can be helpful. If your child needs that structure, break the schedule down into hourly sections. If there are tasks you expect to be done, write it out.

  • Create a network - having a ‘go-to’ group of other parents is always helpful. If they are relatively close by, you could even make arrangements to "exchange" kids during work hours. For older kids, this can be a quick visit or a longer phone call with reminders. Enlist friends and family. Perhaps a relative would love to take your kids. Grandparents can also a great resource. Younger children may need to stay with a relative all day. Older children can sometimes spend a few hours at a time with friends or family to break up the day and add minimal supervision.

  • Consider a home-camp share among friends. This requires some planning but if you have a good group of parent friends who are in the same situation as you, it could really work well.

  • For children that are home alone, give them a project to work on. It can be a fun project or chore related. Setting an expectation for part of the day avoids the summer long television and video game habit.

  • Let go of perfection – None of us are superhuman, so don't try to be. Work within your limitations and relax a little. Delegate, prioritize, and don't be afraid to let some things go!

Holley 3rd Graders Hold Spell-A-Thon Fundraiser

During the month of May, students from Holley Elementary School's 3rd grade partnered with The Arc of Orleans County and held a Spell-A-Thon fundraiser to benefit Camp Rainbow. Students asked family and friends for pledges and then took part in a 100 word spelling test over a one week period. The results were wonderful, with a total of $1,189.15 raised.

The top student was Colin Buesing who raised $204.60. Colin is a student in Mrs. Sevenski's 3rd grade class. Mrs. Sevenski's class received top class honors, raising $399.60. They were treated to a pizza party in their classroom on June 13th.

As a thank you, all the students enjoyed a fun-filled day at Camp Rainbow on Wednesday, June 15th. They participated in many of the same activities that the campers enjoy during the summer (arts & crafts, games, storytime); they even learned the Camp Rainbow song.

Thank you to all the students, parents, teachers, and volunteers who helped to make this funraiser and field trip a success!

Albion 2nd Grade Students Raise Money for Camp Rainbow

The second grade students at Albion's Ronald L. Sodoma Elementary School held a Spell-A-Thon recently and raised $6,597.46 to benefit The Arc's Camp Rainbow. As a thank you for their efforts, the students enjoyed a day at Camp on Thursday, June 16th, experiencing activities as the campers would.

During the closing ceremonies, the teachers and students presented Camp Rainbow with a blue spruce tree (see photo) and a book they put together that contained games that the campers can play using their parachute. Names of students who received 100% on their spelling tests were announced, along with the student who raised the most money. That student was Zachary Kilner from Mr. VanCamp's class; Zachary raised $415.00. Mrs. Beach's class was the top class, raising $1,874.40. They enjoyed a pizza party in their classroom on June 9th.

The Arc would like to thank all the students, teachers, parents, donors, and volunteers who helped make the Spell-A-Thon and the field trip to Camp Rainbow a success. Special thank you to Mrs. Scharping for her planting and flowering skills.

Celebrate Safety

The fourth of July means gathering with family and friends, enjoying good food and outdoor activities, and of course, fireworks. While fireworks are a staple of celebrations this time of year, they can also be very dangerous. Follow these safety tips to avoid injuries:

1. Obey local laws. Do not use fireworks if they are illegal where you live.
2. Use fireworks outdoors only.
3. Use fireworks only as intended - do not try to combine or alter them.
4. Always have a hose handy for possible mishaps.
5. Keeps spectators a safe distance away.
6. Wear safety goggles and use caution when shooting off fireworks.
7. Supervise children very carefully during fireworks displays, especially if they are handling sparklers.
8. Never create or use homemade fireworks of any kind!

The Arc wishes you all a happy and safe July 4th!

March 2011 Employee of the Month is Chuck Eaton

Chuck Eaton, Vocational Training Assistant with The Arc of Orleans County, has been named March 2011 Empoyee of the Month. Chuck has been with the Supported Employment Department since December 2010. He has had a lot to learn being a fairly new employee. Chuck has carried a big caseload as well as been the support person for two enclaves and a mobile crew. One of the mobile crew supervisors was out on medical leave for eight weeks and the other Supported Employment staff were assigned to cover this temporary vacancy. Chuck volunteered to do early morning transports for two individuals we serve so that his co-workers wouldn't have to. This kindness was very much appreciated by his co-workers and the people we serve. Thank you, Chuck, for going above and beyond!

Family Services Staff Named Team of the Quarter

Marge Belmont, Vickie Randall, Chris Capurso, and Terry Condoluci, all staff at Family Support Services, named Team of the Quarter for January through March 2011. One Friday afternoon in March, an individual we serve had a crisis situation. At a routine doctor's appointment for the individual, the individual's natural support needed to be raced to the hospital due to a severe medical condition. The individual had no other supports available and had significant disabilities that would not allow them to be by themselves at the appointment. Marge was the Medicaid Driver and instantly tried calling supports for this person. Marge was able to get a hold of Terry Condoluci Medicaid Service Coordinator. Even though Terry had gone home sick that day she was able to come back into work to assist with this situation. Terry was able to work with the Western New York Developmental Disabilities Service Organization and obtain emergency placement for this individual. Vickie Randall, Recreation Manager, was able to assist with the transporting of the individual. This meant getting prescriptions from the doctor, clothes from their house, medications and working with the WNYDDSO until 10:30 pm that night. Chris Capurso, Medicaid Service Coordinator, along with Marge Belmont picked up the individual when they were able to return home. When they arrived at the individual's home, the support system had another medical crisis and was found unconscious. Marge and Chris called 911 and then worked to get supports in place for this individual. This is a situation that every MSC dreads. We have been complimented by the WNYDDSO on our response and our ability to work together to make things happen for this individual we serve. If it wasn't for this strong team effort the person we serve may not be safe today.

Thank you, Marge, Terry, Vickie, and Chris, for your hard work and commitment to the individuals we serve!
